Bradshaw’s Guide


A market, town situated on the Wyre, with a population of 714, employed in the cotton and print trade. It contains town hall, free school, print and cotton factories, four chapels, and a church, rebuilt in 1746. In, the river is good trout and chub fishing; close by are the remains of Greenhalgh Castle, which was garrisoned by the Earl of Derby for Charles I. in 1643. The Pretender occupied this place in 1715. In the vicinity are Kirkland Hall seat of T. Cole, Esq.; Bleasdale Tower, seat of W. J. Garnett, Esq., and Bleasdale Fell, 1,709 feet high.
