Balla, as in Irish names, means a Norman town.

Kirk Manghold, 3 miles to the right, has lead mines, various Scandinavian remains, a pillar with runic characters, and a carved cross. From the hill overlooking the church there is a fine view of Ramsey and its bay. Here Prince Albert stood to view it, in 1846, and a small pillar marks the spot
